The Lakeland 50 2012 Race report.

I remember smoking a fag half way through a cross country race in senior school. I was 14 years old. You see, I had potential, it was recognised by my sports tutor, Mrs Mountford, the thing was, I had to run like crazy to catch up again during the race for two reasons: 1 So that Mrs Mountford didn't suspect I’d been smoking and 2: In order that she didn't lose that belief in me. Then I discovered make up and dresses and my pumps got a little dusty. Until two and a half years ago that is. This is hardly the time to talk about my very limited running career however it's safe to say, that it's amazing what you can achieve when you believe in your capacity.

The Kate Burge Sea-to-Summit Fell Race trailer - "Together we climb"

For the last two years I've had this race in my diary and for whatever reason's not managed to make it over to the Island for the event. It ticks all of the boxes in terms of what I love about fell running, and someone once reminded me that you should always include a body of water in your run. That alone is a good enough persuasion, however it appeals for so much more. There is something peaceful about it, unassuming and yet quietly challenging. It's long enough that you can lift your head up, appreciate your surroundings and absorb the beauty of the fell, and yet at 14.5km it's short enough to attract runners who like to have a fun day out there followed by homemade cake, tea and stories of woe in the pub after. This year the Kate-Burge sea-to-summit race it's hosting the English Fell Championships so it's going to be an exciting addition to what is already a popular event on the IOM. HIgh Peak 40

I ache. The High Peak 40 is no easy race. It's challenging on many levels. The mixture of fell, road, technical, ascent/descent and public dodging makes for an interesting day in the Peak District. I've recce'd the course a couple of times and am pleased that I did. However this course is marked, really well, really really well so those who are tentative with a map, this is a race that will suit. An early Saturday start driving over to Buxton, I circled the event area at the school three times trying to find the entrance. Things were not looking good from the start!
